More Coin Shooting Ideas
Apart from treasure hunting, coinshooting is a hobby in its own
right. Many people who have no interest in seeking the big find
enjoy this activity. Its all about getting out in the open to
look for coins other people have lost over the years.
One of the best benefits of coinshooting is exercise. In the
process of looking for coins you will firm up your muscles and
reduce flab, as well as improve your breathing. Fresh air and
good exercise may improve your general outlook on life. That
alone is a good reason to take up coinshooting.
When looking for coins you will always find trash. Take along a
bag for the trash you find and dispose of it properly. Along the
same line, don’t leave holes in the ground. Always leave the area
you hunt as good or better than you found it. Most coins are near
the surface, but if you must dig for a deeper coin it can be
fixed so that most people cannot tell that a hole has been dug.
Use common sense when coinshooting. Do not go into areas that are
unsafe. It is not worth risking injury over a coin if anyone
challenges you for the coin you just found. Do not enter unsafe
buildings. Stay out of areas you should not be in.
You can improve your success if you don't hurry when coin
hunting. Traveling at a slower place allows you a better chance
of hearing the feint little tones of deep old coins. If you find
a coin near the surface there are often more coins in the same
place only deeper. Remember when you hurry you miss coins. A coin
shooter going at a slower pace behind you will surly find the
coins you missed.
Aside from your metal detector, you only need a few tools for
coin shooting. You will not need a shovel or trowel. A 10-12
inch long screwdriver with a flat thin point will work just fine.
When using the screwdriver, thrust firmly but gently into the
ground to prevent damaging the coin. By pressing gently under the
coin with the screwdriver, the coin will come to the surface. A
stiff putty knife works well for digging up a small chunk of
grass. A small piece of sod can be cut, removed and replaced
after the coin is out. Just replace the grass and step down on
the spot.
Check the history of an area for a town square, gazebo or
bandstand where large groups of townspeople would gather. These
are always good places to search for coins.
And remember, it is always a good practice to ask permission to
coinshoot, whether it is in a city or residential area.
